Good Bye "Wi-Fi" and Hello "Li-Fi"

It seems like the popular wireless means of data travel which we currently know as "Wi-Fi" will be nothing but a memory in a matter of time as a "new kid appear on the block".

I'll give you an understanding of what's taking place. The famous Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data from one location to a wireless adapter (receiver) in another location and vise versa.
But Li-Fi (light fidelity) however, uses light beams to transmit data. Light travels at 299,792,458 m/s (very very fast). This opens up a new way of sending data, you could say data will be travelling at "light speed".

Li-Fi is an emerging technology that uses specialised LED lights bulbs providing low-cost wireless internet connectivity with speeds of up to 10Gb/s or more almost everywhere. This means that you will be able to gain more net speeds for a lesser payment, (O_O) sounds good to me.

Using a digital modulation technique called Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplexing (OFDM), researchers enabled micro-LED light bulbs to handle millions of changes in light intensity per second, effectively behaving like an extremely fast on/off switch.
Which when you think about it, that's machine language, on and off, 1 and 0. And because of this effect it allows large chunks of binary data (a series of ones and zeros) to be transmitted at high speed.

Another big deal is that with Wi-Fi the further away you move from the radio transmitter the weaker the signal becomes and even at a close distance the signal fluctuates, Li-Fi on the other hand promises to keep a constant/consistent connection. The gamers will love this as they will hardly experience on-line connection lag.

I encourage you to comment below on what your thoughts and expectations are for this new wireless means of data travel. (^_^)

  2. Ok this sound way too good to be true but if it does work like they say it will that will be awesome i can hardly wait for it to be launched. Technology oh technology.

  3. Well you had me at more speed for lesser cost,I like the idea my only hope is that when its finally release it makes its way to our part of the world at "lightening Speed" :D

  4. Very interesting indeed! Is its usage limited to a small area? Because it uses visible light, I am wondering if physical obstructions would affect its usability. If so, how practical is this?

    1. Throughout further reading it seems like obstacles and area is not a huge issues.
